JUANITO MANGUERRA ONGSANSOY After his brave battle with pancreatic cancer, it is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our father and friend, Juanito, who died in his sleep at his home in Winnipeg on Thursday, February 1, 2007, at the too-young age of 67 years. Remaining to forever cherish Juanito's memory are his sons, Hans Jeffrey, of Vancouver, and Ian Nigel, of Winnipeg; ex-wife Emma; sister Adoring; brothers, Rot and Rey; half-siblings, Roderick, Rachel and Bo; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, godchildren and friends. Juanito moves on to a better place having accomplished much while touching the hearts and minds of many. He was predeceased by his first wife, Fe; parents, Juan and Loreto; sisters, Evelyn, Edna and Dely; brother Domingo; and half-sister Elaine. Born October 14, 1939, in Binan, Laguna, the Philippines, Juanito became known as a scholar and a gentleman, while having always been a loving brother and a son to be most proud of. Shy and reserved but loyal and proud, Juanito's keen intellect was superseded only by his curiosity and a thirst for knowledge that never left him. He was an exemplary student at Far Eastern University and the University of Santo Tomas, before further pursuing his studies at Nottingham University in England and at the University of Manitoba. He was also a respected professor at both Saint Louis University in Baguio and De La Salle University in Manila. Juanito's greatest academic loves were mathematics and philosophy. He was one of the few people you would ever meet who could work out complex mathematical equations in his head - that is, without the benefit of a calculator or even pencil and paper - while simultaneously providing the etymology of a five-syllable word. He was a member of Mensa, the oldest and best-known world society of intellectuals, and also compiled a large and varied book collection that numbered in the thousands. In 1975, Juanito moved to Canada, where he worked primarily as a payroll and accounting clerk for companies including Superior Bus, Co-op Implements, Duffy's Taxi and the Manitoba Eastern Star Chalet. Juanito also did his civic duty, working at various times for Statistics Canada, Elections Canada and Elections Manitoba. In 1991, he won 2nd place in a Small Business Week spelling bee. If you wanted to find Juanito on Thursdays, you would just have to head down to the lanes where he loved playing in his bowling league. This was in addition to being a superior chess player, avid fisherman, enthusiastic road-tripper and voracious consumer of newspapers and current events. A private family funeral service for Juanito will be held in the Chapel of Memories, in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel; interment to follow in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. For further details, please call Hans at (204)-694-5470 or (204)-694-4160. The family would like to thank all the medical staff who assisted in this difficult time, and ask that you save a special place in your thoughts and prayers for our beloved Juanito / Junior / Tito Jun / Uncle Johnny. Juanito's arrangements have been entrusted to the Family Owned Funeral Chapel of: WOJCIK'S ALL BELIEFS FAITHS FUNERAL CHAPEL CREMATORIUM 897 - 4665
